We're two sisters who are craft book publishers and found ourselves in the midst of an avocado grove. We bought this house where we planned to conduct our publishing business and in the deal got 4 acres of avocado trees thrown in. Now we're not only publishers but ranchers as well! This blog is all about avocados and anything else that strikes my fancy.

Sepia Saturday #128 The Blue Angel - Falling In Love Again

One of my favorite movies is the 1930s German film The Blue Angel starring Marlene Dietrich. The reason I love it so much is the song she sings as a naughty cabaret artist - Falling in Love Again. I recently found some sheet music of the song and just had to buy it.

Here's a youtube version of the song by Miss Dietrich herself:

Don't you just love her risque outfit?  The movie is quite interesting. It's available from Netflix (if you've never seen it). Do you have Netflix in your neck of the woods?

Marlene went on to a very successful film career. She became a U.S. citizen and during WWII she performed before thousands of troops in Algeria, Italy, England and France and sold more war bonds than any other star. When asked why she did all of this touring despite the danger, she replied "out of decency".

She was awarded the US Medal of Freedom by the US in 1947 and the French Legion of Honor.

  1. Ha -- that outfit reminds me of my friend who came out of the restroom with the back of her dress caught in her pantyhose. And speaking of which, thank gawd we no longer have to worry with garters. Ick pooey ~ I enjoyed this post.

    1. That's so funny. that is what her outfit looked like only backwards or I should say frontwards. It sure was naughty for those days. But I guess that's how pre-war Germany was from what I've read.

  2. Oh yes, although maybe not as much as the men that sought after her every performance! She was a lovely lady with such a grand singing voice!

  3. Cheers to her for helping with the war effort! I don't know that I've seen this particular movie, but I do love old classic movies!

  4. Nancy, when I did mine I thought perhaps somebody else will use Marlene Dietrich as she was so well known, beautiful and a great voice as well. The blue angel was very famous, yes I like her risky outfit!

  5. She looks like she belongs in Willy Wonka land. A fun post, thank you.

  6. Thank you for this entertaining post. I’d forgotten how much over-acting went on in those old films. I never actually thought much of Dietrich’s voice but as an actress with a large personality she deserves all the credit and that costume is so funny.

  7. Oh dear, I remember The Blue Angel. I can still hear that gravelly voice.

  8. Legend, it was her singing delivery that made the songs. I vaguely remember they filmed the German and English version of Blue Angel in the same year, stamina as well.

  9. This is wonderful! I enjoyed the film clip ... that was racy, even the naked mannequin. Love how she got him so flattered near the end of her song. I'll need to watch the whole movie now!

  10. "Love" must be the most popular theme ever for songs.

  13. What fun! The style of acting has changed so much since then, but the idea of titillating the audience with a little bare skin seems to have been alive and well even way back then. I remember hearing the Doris Day version of that song on the radio. Late '50s or early '60s maybe?

  14. Man, my head is already full of music, and here's another favorite. Lilli Marlene, The Mikado, Falling in love again, this should prove to be an interesting day in my head.
    I love her quote!!!
    That's the spirit!!

  16. I've never seen the movie, it's on my todo list. What fascinates me is that she lived for a long time in exclusion in Paris during the last part of her life.
