We're two sisters who are craft book publishers and found ourselves in the midst of an avocado grove. We bought this house where we planned to conduct our publishing business and in the deal got 4 acres of avocado trees thrown in. Now we're not only publishers but ranchers as well! This blog is all about avocados and anything else that strikes my fancy.

The End of Fallbrook Avocados?

It's not looking good for the Fallbrook avocado. In the March 6 edition of the North County Times, Pat Maio says that our local avocado crop has fallen victim to rising water rates which is leading many growers to give up. Major packing houses are relying on imported fruit.

O.K., I knew that avocados were coming in from Chile, Peru and Mexico. But now we're being surpassed by fruit production from Northern California!  It turns out their water is much cheaper than ours. The North is taking over the South!! Sounds like a new civil war to me. And it looks like the North will win again.

  1. I hate to hear this but it makes sense given the water situation in SoCal since they diverted it in the 1930s. Fallbrook IS avocadoes to me. I look for CA avocados when I shop. Do NOT like the Fla ones--too thinned skinned & watery. I boycott the Mexican ones because, NAFTA sucks. I knew it would hurt the farmers in the US when Clinton pushed it through. One of his mistakes & Hillary thinks so too.

  2. Hi California Girl,
Yes, it really is a shame. We hate to see our avocado grove go. We're going to give it one more year and see what happens. But it's not looking good.

  3. I hate to say it, but we in the north have been figuring the state was going to split eventually. I just wonder who gets Bakersfield.

And yes, those of us in the north have always silently muttered things amongst ourselves about our water going south. I remember when I moved to Los Angeles from the north, where we were having a severe drought, I was so angry when I saw people washing their sidewalks instead of sweeping them.

Let's hope for all of us the snow pack this year is a good one.
